Happy Saturday Packer Nation!
Wow...this draft feel like replays of 1999, 2004 and 2015 doesn’t it? Those drafts netted at least two CB’s with their first picks in the draft. 1999 draft class brought Antuan Edwards, Fred Vinson and Mike McKenzie with the first three picks.
I have said all along the Packers issues on defense are all over the field. The most glaring weakness obviously lacking quality cover corners to shade today’s pass happy pass catchers. We just shored up that deficiency on days 1-2.
Lets start with Josh Jackson, a “mirror and shadow” cover corner who excels when the ball is in the air. www.nfl.com/prospects/josh-jackson?id=32462018-0002-5600-3068-0cebf6c8b276 He has uncanny football instincts and his 27 pass deflections and 8 INT’s in 2017 really highlight this man’s playmaking ability. When I watched his tape against Wisconsin last year, he was a one man wrecking crew who returned two INT’s for TD’s against our beloved Badgers. youtu.be/4wvsKUDD9dE youtu.be/fg6YmZ_ttfo The week before he had 3 INT’s against #3 Ohio St in their upset win.
He allowed an amazing 41.3% of pass completions to receivers he covered, which was best in the nation in 2017. He made a play on 25.7% of his available pass opportunities. These are all great indicators that he could become a shut down cover corner we desperately need. Could we have “Jackson Island” in Green Bay? Let’s get him on the field and see.
We went into the third round with no picks from the trade to Seattle to draft Jaire Alexander. That didn’t stop Gutekunst from trading up back into the 3rd round to draft a player they coveted in Oren Burks, a speedy and rangy ILB from Vanderbilt. www.nfl.com/prospects/oren-burks?id=32462018-0002-5601-419e-39862d10c2d8 He is an unrefined player at that position who will need a little work but right away he should be able to contribute on special teams and in nickel situations. Speed kills and he has it running a 40 time in the 4.5’s. For a 6’3” 233lb man that is impressive. Here are some highlights which show his playing speed is phenomenal. m.packers.com/news/video/oren-burks-highlights-9a2ef5e5-677e-4c32-b17f-aca1524ab316
This is a solid start to a pivotal draft that could secure the back end. DAY 3 has 8 more picks on slate. My thinking is they won’t sit around if there is a player they like. They still have holes at OLB, DL depth, right guard and right tackle. Let’s not forget getting another WR target for Aaron Rodgers. Happy drafting!
